WorkReady

YouthWorks is a summer work program placing students in summer youth service projects that address specific community needs. The work experience portion provides students with internship opportunities within specific occupational fields that also allow students to earn an academic credit. Both components represent the Summer Youth Service Corps (SYSC).

CISP is proud to be the only organization in the city of Philadelphia to provide summer employment opportunities to students with special needs. This summer, as in previous years, CISP provided special needs students in the School District of Philadelphia, the Overbrook School for the Blind and the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf with exposure to the world of work through employment placements with various businesses and agencies throughout the city of Philadelphia. Students received training and career exposure in the clerical field, building maintenance, landscaping, childcare, food service and hospitality service. Many special-needs students transition into permanent employment as a result of their Summer YouthWorks employment placements.

The following YouthWorks programs are administered in collaboration with Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD) and the Philadelphia Youth Network:

Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Educational Project

This was the fourth year Cobbs Creek participated in our Summer YouthWorks SYSC project. Cobbs Creek engaged students from Bartram and West Philadelphia High School and Turner Middle School in three projects leading to the beautification and healthy environment of Cobbs Creek Park. Students performed construction and proper maintenance of park trails including removing invasive trees and planting native tree species, assessed the quality of Cobbs Creek's streams in terms of the pollution levels which is relative to the health and growth of the trees, identified species of trees, and made identification tags for the tree species. Students also created a community newsletter that informed the community about the projects taking place in Cobbs Creek Park.

Roxborough Intergenerational Dialogue Project

Roxborough High School students and residents of the Bala Nursing Home engaged in communication through games and craft. Students took an oral history of a Bala Nursing Home resident "buddy". With the information obtained from the "buddy" students created a cloth memory album for the "buddy," and themselves and developed a memory quilt. Students researched the origin and history of the particular games, studied tessellation patterns and researched the history of the quilt pattern.
