Culinary and Hospitality Program (CHP)

Program Overview

The Culinary & Hospitality Program (CHP) of Philadelphia is operated by Communities In Schools of Philadelphia, Inc (CISP) in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia.  For the past nine years, CISP has provided training for students and teachers, in class technical support, supplies, and internships.

Student Hospitality Internship Program (SHIP)
The Student Hospitality Internship Program provides junior and senior level students opportunities to experience the culinary and hospitality industry through work site activities.  SHIP students work in the industry up to six weeks per experience, which includes paid and stipend experiences.

Some of the participating worksites include:

Building Academic Skills Through Enrichment (BASTE)
One of the core components of the CHP program is the strong focus on enhancing the academic skills and culinary skills.  Students have the opportunity to earn transferable college credits, develop advanced culinary skills and participate in career exploration activities.

Some of the participating schools and activities include:

Culinary Student Showcase
Extended Classroom Learning Opportunities through the Culinary Student Showcases afford the students the opportunity to take classroom knowledge and apply it to real life.  Students develop critical skills including: teamwork, leadership, timeliness, and public speaking.

Some of the activities include:

Community Engagement
One of the CIS basics “a chance to give back to their peers and community” is best demonstrated through our Community Engagement component.  The students have an opportunity to share what they have learned and educate others in the areas of nutrition and culinary skill development.

Some of the activities include:

Mentoring Chefs Seminar Program
All participating schools have opportunities to engage industry chefs with their students.  Through this CISP sponsored program, the chefs receive stipends to share their talents and skills in the classroom with the students and teachers.

Scholarships
Students work with the CISP Scholarship Coordinator to complete FAFSA forms, scholarship applications and other institution specific financial aid documents.  Each year, CISP sponsors a scholarship workshop for all CHP students.  Students are also eligible to apply for private scholarships directly through CISP.

Professional Development

CISP partners with the School District of Philadelphia to provide industry specific professional development to the teachers.  CISP also provides an after-school and Saturday workshop series.  Teachers are able to guide their own professional development by suggesting relevant topics.  Using these suggestions as a guide, CISP recruits culinary and hospitality leaders throughout Greater Philadelphia to share their knowledge.  These workshops provide teachers with an in-depth look at industry standards.
