Beacon Program

Program Description

Beacon Center programs across the city work to support the following desired results in the lives of Philadelphia youth:

  • Children and youth are involved in healthy activities and do not engage in high-risk behavior.
  • Children live in safe and supportive communities and environments.
  • Children and youth achieve in school and make a successful transition to adulthood.
  • Children and youth have an enriching and safe environment to be in during after school and evening hours.

The Beacon Center at the Dick School is a full service center providing activities to enrich the lives of children and youth and empower the community. Educational and recreational services are offered for ages 6 through adult.

These services are delivered through three program components:

After School Program: Homework Assistance, Tutoring, Computer Assisted Instruction, Sports, Recreation, Performing and Visual Arts are offered Monday through Friday from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM for 50 children in grades K-5.

Family Preservation: Academic Enhancement, Test Taking Skills, ABE/GED, Personal Development, Youth Council, Recreation, Healthy Life Styles, Urban Expressions and Community Engagement from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM Monday through Friday for youth and adults.

Summer Enrichment Camp: Academic Enrichment, Resiliency Skills Development, Sports, Recreation and Cultural Exposures are offered in an eight-week summer program from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM Monday through Friday.

Activities within each component will include but, not be limited to:

  • Classical Ballet, Basketball Leagues, Martial Arts, Video Production, Etiqette/Charm Clsasses, Spoken Word, Drama, Modern Dance, Drill Team, Aerobics, Yoga, and Tennis.
  • Family Nights, Financial Literacy, Line Dancing, Cooking, Book Clubs, Computer Instruction, and Parenting Skills Development.
