Ladies of Learning is a mentoring program in which selected parenting female students gain post-secondary education and college exposure to mentors, speakers and administrators. These mentors themselves serve as excellent models having come from similar backgrounds while obtaining Masters and/or Doctorate degrees in their fields of study.
Students gain awareness in the areas of goal setting, college essay writing, career exploration, financial aid, and more. Participants have the chance to work directly with staff members to understand expectations and enhance college readiness. Participants are selected on the basis of their grade point average, attendance, leadership abilities, and college interests. Students come from various Philadelphia public high schools to interact with Community College and Communities In Schools staff during the school year in sessions on two campuses. The seminar series culminates in a ceremony with esteemed local leaders, who share their paths to success. This past academic year alone, important outcomes include:
- At least 50% of Ladies of Learning participants have self-reported attending Community College of Philadelphia upon graduation
- A minimum of a 50% increase in scores evaluating college awareness, as indicated from pre-and post -test grades
- At least 75% of Ladies of Learning graduates go on to accredited post-secondary institutions
Created in 2002, Ladies of Learning is a partnership initiated through a partnership between Communities In Schools of Philadelphia enrolled in the ELECT program and Community College of Philadelphia.
