Summer Employment
Two summer employment programs will operate this summer under the direction of Scholarship and Employment Coordinator, Atiya Smith. Fifteen students will work through the Office of Housing & Community Development (OHCD); twenty students will work through the School District of Philadelphia in a six-week internship program with:

Career Explorations 2007 @ Johnson & Wales University
Six high school students entering their junior or senior year in the fall of 2007 will participate in this three-day summer program. Students will fly to Providence, RI and gain wonderful memories and experience while staying on-campus and participating in hands-on laboratory classes during this culinary arts exploration.

Summer Institute 2007 at The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College
Six high school students entering their senior year in the fall of 2007 will participate in this three-day adventure into the world of hospitality. This hands-on program will allow students to stay on-campus get involved in culinary arts and management. In just three days, students will gain a true understanding of what this rewarding filed has to offer.

Cooking Up Opportunities for the Village
Students from Thomas Edison and Randolph Career Academy will volunteer at this fundraising event by assisting 10 chefs from around the city with preparing and serving food and beverages. The event will be held at the WHYY Studios, located Independence Mall West, 150 North 6th Street, Philadelphia, PA from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.
Tickets are $65
All proceeds support educational programs at Children’s Village Day Care.

College 101: Intro to Campus Life Workshop
Careers through Culinary Arts Program held a workshop for all students who received scholarships from C-CAP National. The workshop was held at central office. The workshop provided students with information they can use in college. Students participated in a panel discussion with former C-CAP alumni and an industry chef, Bernard Talley. Every student received a gift basket with items to help them start college.

BBQ on the Farm – High School Barbecue Challenge
Sponsored by JNA Institute of Culinary Arts & Meadow Creek Welding
Careers through Culinary Arts Program students from Frankford, Franklin Towne Charter and Randolph Career Academy competed against each other and two teams (North Montco Tech Career Center from Lansdale, PA and Eastern Center for Arts & Technology from Willow Grove, PA) in preparing and cooking chicken, ribs and a chef’s choice on a smoker. For the third year in a row, C-CAP students came out on top. Randolph Career Academy won first place in the overall competition and received an $8,500 scholarship to attend JNA Institute of Culinary Arts. Frankford received second place in the overall competition and Franklin Towne Charter received second place in the chef’s choice competition.

ELECT/CTC Teen Summit
Careers through Culinary Arts Program students from South Philadelphia High School volunteered at the Ninth Annual Teen Summit. Students served lunch during the event to over 50 attendees.

C-CAP Kids Cook for Cookware
Sponsored by All-Clad & Bloomingdale’s
Careers through Culinary Arts Program students participated in the All-Clad/Bloomingdale’s Cook-Off fundraiser, held at Bloomingdale’s in King of Prussia, PA. Students from three School District of Philadelphia high schools (Dobbins CTE, Germantown and Randolph Career Academy) competed against each other by preparing their original Fun Finger Foods recipe. The winning high school team, Dobbins CTE received an engraved stainless steel frying pan, two pieces of All-Clad cookware and a Keurig coffee, tea and hot chocolate machine for their school. Additionally, the other two teams received two pieces of All-Clad cookware.

Scholarship Awards Breakfast
Careers through Culinary Arts Program held our annual awards breakfast resulting from the C-CAP culinary scholarship competition at The Four Seasons Hotel. Awards ranging from $1,000 to $80,000 totaling over $700,000 in scholarships were awarded to twenty-eight senior students. Scholarships from C-CAP National and Whole Foods Market of Jenkintown, PA will allow students the opportunity to continue their education at the post-secondary level. Cooking for Scholarships Final Competition
Careers through Culinary Arts Program held our final culinary competition at The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College. Twenty-eight finalists prepared two classic French recipes from memory as they competed for scholarships to colleges, internship and apprentice programs.

My Compliments to the Chef, Part VI
The Careers through Culinary Arts Program major fundraising event held at the Crystal Tea Room welcomed approximately 400 supporters. Sixteen high schools and seventeen restaurants participated by serving sample-sized culinary creations. During the Friends of C-CAP event (a prelude to My Compliments to the Chef), the first “Philadelphia Iron Chef Competition” was held. Three local executive chefs: Mackenzie Hilton, Chef de Cuisine, Mercato; Luis Melendez, Executive Chef, Gigi Restaurant; and Andrew Perekupa, Executive Chef, Aramark competed in a mystery basket challenge. Three C-CAP students worked along-side the chefs and served as runners during this well received competition.
All high schools competed in a Best Presentation Competition. First place was awarded to Dobbins Career and Technical Education, second place was awarded to Frankford and third place was awarded to Germantown.

Best Teen Chef Competition
Students from Frankford High School competed in the local competition held at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Omar was named “The Art Institute of Philadelphia’s Best Teen Chef 2007” and advanced to the final competition to compete against 23 high school seniors from across North America.

Cooking for Scholarships Preliminary Competition
Over 70 students participated from seventeen School District of Philadelphia high schools in the culinary competition. Students competed for a chance to compete in the final competition for scholarships.

Union League Culinary Extravaganza
Four School District of Philadelphia high schools (Thomas Edison, Germantown, Frankford and Randolph Career Academy) participated in the Union League Culinary Extravaganza a fundraiser that benefited the South Jersey Food Bank and The Chef and Child Foundation. Students served sample-size servings to approximately 400 people.

Culinary Connection Farm Show
Students from Saul High School for Agricultural Sciences participated in the Culinary Connection Farm Show in Harrisburg, PA. Students assisted leading Pennsylvania chefs with live broadcast cooking demonstrations. Students also helped serve Farm Show participants food prepared during the cooking demonstrations.

Gingerbread House Competition

Four School District of Philadelphia high schools (Bok Career and Technical, Dobbins Career and Technical, Frankford and Swenson Arts & Technology) participated in the Gingerbread House Competition fundraising event. Students created gingerbread houses to auction for the event.

Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association Scholarship Awards Luncheon
The Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association held their Scholarship Awards Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency and three Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP) students from Frankford High School and Franklin Towne Charter High School received the Michael M. Erica Gaither Appearance on the 10 Show
Frankford High School senior, Erica Gaither was invited to appear on the 10 Show to prepare a Halloween culinary creation for viewers. Erica and Chef Bell introduced “Frightfully Good Pumpkin Soup” and received thumbs up from the studio’s audience. |
