Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP) is a national nonprofit organization which specializes in enriching public school culinary programs by providing training for teachers and students, and preparing young people for careers in the food service industry. Since 1990, C-CAP has trained over 500 teachers, reached 100,000 students in over 200 schools, and awarded over 1,850 scholarships, totaling over $17.8 million. C-CAP manages the largest independent culinary scholarship program in the United States. The organization offers long-term college and career counseling, as well as networking advice to scholarship recipients. In the last sixteen years, C-CAP has donated more than $2.2 million worth of equipment and supplies to financially-strapped public schools in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Arizona.
In Philadelphia, C-CAP serves over 900 students annually within seventeen area high schools. To date, C-CAP has awarded over $1 million in scholarships to students in the School District of Philadelphia. Students received over $430,000 in scholarships during the 2005-2006 school year.
C-CAP enriches current public high school Family and Consumer Science (Home Economics) curricula by providing teachers with the basic culinary techniques needed for entry-level jobs in the industry. The teachers, in turn, pass these skills on to their students. Whenever possible, C-CAP also matches each teacher with an industry professional who visits the classroom and acts as a guest speaker and instructor/role model for both teachers and students. By focusing on improving skills and opportunities for both students and teachers, C-CAP creates a synergy that benefits all. C-CAP further motivates students with opportunities for apprenticeships and internships with local restaurants, hotels, and other industry establishments.
