Vice President 's Biography

Treena Y. Reid, M.Ed.
Executive Vice President
Communities in Schools of Philadelphia, Inc.

"My belief is to make a difference in positive ways," and for Treena Reid, she has done just that for 30 years, on behalf of children and their families as a teacher, an administrator and a consultant. For the past 11 years, Mrs. Reid has worked at Communities In Schools of Philadelphia, Inc. (CISP). CISP is one of the largest of 200 independent affiliates of Communities In Schools National—the largest stay-in-school network in the United States. CISP is devoted to serving Philadelphia's youth on the foundation that every child needs and deserves THE CIS BASICS: 1) a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult; 2) a safe place to learn and grow; 3) a healthy start and a healthy future; 4) a marketable skill to use upon graduation and; 5) a chance to give back to peers and community.

As Executive Vice President of CISP, Mrs. Reid is responsible for over 100 different educational, year-round initiatives, serving over 9,000 students within the School District of Philadelphia. She works diligently to develop new and effective policies and procedures for students, with strong emphasis on the Education Leading to Employment and Career Training/Cradle To Classroom (ELECT/CTC) teen parent programs and the Males Achieving Responsibility Successfully (MARS) program. Her areas of expertise include: abstinence education, beyond school hours alternative education, and career academies. She also publishes a newsletter called "Making a Difference." Her programs have been recognized and duplicated as "Best Practice Models" by state and national institutions. Mrs. Reid has also presented at the Senate and the National Governor's Association Meetings. By writing and hosting a live cable TV show in Philadelphia entitled, "Making a Difference," Mrs. Reid is able to reach beyond Philadelphia. When asked about her philosophy in education, she casually notes, "What I do everyday is to help people in the best way that I can: to achieve their goals, so they can, in turn, help others to do the same."

Mrs. Reid is an only child to Mrs. Sachiko Sammons; a mom to Michael, Sr.; a proud grandmother of Michael Jr. and Alexandria; and resides with her husband, Gregory. Mrs. Reid graduated from Temple University, received a Master's of Education from Arcadia University in Glenside, PA, and has completed all required doctoral courses. She is a member of many organizations including: The National Education Association, National Association for Female Executives, National Dropout Prevention Organization, National Black Administrator’s Association, Child Welfare League of America, and the International Fatherhood Initiative. She has received a Community Service Award from the Susquehanna Neighborhood Advisory Council, a Community Partner Award by the Children's Aid Society of Pennsylvania and was the 2004 Honoree in the field of Education from the March of Dimes Association. In addition, Mrs. Reid volunteers her time with various agencies and churches. "My life is about helping others." By consistently making one small, positive difference in someone's life, will positively impact societal change. We at CISP are anticipating greater changes to prepare students for life.
