Communities In Schools of Philadelphia, Inc. is an affiliate of Communities In Schools, Inc. (CIS), the largest dropout prevention program in the country. Founded in 1977, CIS operates in 27 states and the District of Columbia, serving 1.2 million elementary and secondary students in 3,250 schools. CIS provides services to students in their schools, drawing primarily on existing community resources. CISP, a chartered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is in fact the largest of more than 200 independently incorporated affiliates of CIS. In 1986, CISP was created out of the Office of Vocational Education as the “right arm” for the School District of Philadelphia (SDP). CISP, working in close partnership with the SDP, has grown steadily and annually serves more than 13,000 students in Philadelphia, K through post-high-school, through more than 25 separate programs that provide services to in-school and out of school youth.  Combining efforts of dedicated staff and strong community and school-based partnerships, CISP programs now yield an 85% graduation rate for eligible seniors. Our specialized programmatic approach incorporates the following CIS BASICS to provide support to Philadelphia’s youth, because every child needs and deserves:

  1. a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
  2. a safe place to learn and grow
  3. a healthy start and a healthy future
  4. a marketable skill to use upon graduation
  5. a chance to give back to peers and community
