RIF & Macy’s Provides Books to Improve Student Literacy

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and Macy’s Be Book Smart Campaign is Providing Nearly 900,000 Books to Children Across America This Summer

Communities In Schools of Philadelphia is pleased to announce that our Teen Parenting Program has been awarded a grant to receive 540 books for students and their families this summer through the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) Be Book Smart Campaign. This grant is 100% funded for RIF through Macy’s.

The mission of RIF is to motivate young children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. RIF’s highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. RIF is the largest children’s literacy nonprofit in the United States.

“We are grateful to RIF and Macy’s for their support and dedication to the children of Philadelphia,” stated Jennifer Pitt, Assistant Director of the Teen Parenting Program. “This will enable us to teach our young parents the necessity of reading to their children and why literacy is crucial to the healthy development of a family.”

Distributions will be held in the fall at various high schools. In addition, the program will be planning workshops for teen parents and motivational reading activities for their children. “This aligns with Communities In Schools of Philadelphia’s Leaders & Readers Community Program, which allows industry to merge with community, by inviting remarkably talented leaders to spend one-hour reading thought-provoking work from authors, orators, and poets that speak to issues of humanity, health, education, and community,” stated Dennis M. Dumpson, Senior Development Officer for Communities In Schools of Philadelphia.
